The elevator that passengers see—the cab with its buttons, lights, and doors—is only the visible tip of a much larger technological iceberg. Below, hidden in machine rooms and hoistways, lies a complex array of equipment that makes vertical transportation possible. The elevator equipment market supplies these critical subsystems, and hydraulic elevators have their own specific component needs.

The Hydraulic Power Unit: Heart of the System

This assembly consists of an electric motor, a hydraulic pump, a tank (reservoir), a valve block, and a controller. The motor is typically a three-phase induction motor, sized from 5 to 30 horsepower depending on load and speed. The pump is usually a gear pump (vane pumps for quieter operation) and is submerged in the oil within the tank, which lubricates and cools it.

The tank itself is sized to hold enough oil to fully extend the cylinder plus a reserve, typically 100-300 liters for a standard passenger elevator. The valve block contains the directional valve (solenoid-operated, directs oil to cylinder or to tank), the flow control valve (proportional, adjusts speed), the pressure relief valve (protects against overpressure), and the rupture valve (safety). The controller is a microprocessor-based device that receives floor call signals, monitors door status, and commands the motor contactor and valve solenoids.

Cylinders and Piston Assemblies

The cylinder is the most massive component in the elevator equipment market for hydraulics. It is typically made of seamless drawn steel tubing, honed to a smooth internal finish (32 microinch Ra or better) to minimize seal wear. The piston is a steel rod, hard chrome-plated for corrosion resistance and low friction, attached to a piston head with seals. For in-ground cylinders, the assembly is installed in a drilled hole and encased in a steel sleeve or surrounded by concrete grout.

For hole-less telescopic cylinders, multiple nested stages (typically two or three) are precision-machined so that they extend sequentially. The largest stage moves first, followed by the next, and so on, achieving a stroke that is 2-3 times the retracted length. Telescopic cylinders require careful alignment: if the stages bind, the cylinder can jam or leak. Therefore, they are factory-assembled and tested, shipped as a complete unit, and installed using specialized lifting equipment.

Controllers, Doors, and Safety Systems

Beyond the hydraulic components, the elevator equipment market includes electronic controllers, door operators, and safety devices. The controller is the brain: it processes hall calls (up/down buttons on each floor) and car calls (floor buttons inside the cab), manages door opening and closing times, and sends commands to the power unit. In a group of two or more elevators, a group controller optimizes dispatching to minimize wait times.

Door operators are electric motor-driven mechanisms that open and close the car and hall doors in sync. They include torque-limiting clutches to prevent injury if a door closes on a passenger. Safety devices include: final limit switches (stop the elevator if it over-travels the top or bottom landing), car door lock (prevents the car from moving unless the door is closed and locked), hall door locks (prevent opening the hall door unless the car is present), overspeed governor (a mechanical device that activates the car brakes if descent speed exceeds 115% of rated speed), and buffer (a shock absorber at the bottom of the pit). 

The hydraulic system adds a rupture valve (prevents free fall if a hose bursts) and often a manual lowering valve (allows firefighters or technicians to lower the car during a power failure). As the elevator equipment market moves toward greater intelligence, expect to see more component-to-controller communication via CANbus or Ethernet, allowing the power unit to report pump run hours, the controller to request different valve opening profiles based on load (weighed by load cells in the car platform), and the door operator to report cycle counts and torque readings, enabling true predictive maintenance across the entire elevator system.
